| What is Korean Red Ginseng? ![]() Ginseng roots are taken orally as adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, nourishing stimulants, and are taken for the treatment of type II diabetes, and for sexual stamina of men. Its botanical name is 'Panax'. Panax is a compound word of 'pan' from 'pana' meaning 'all' and 'ax' from 'axon' meaning 'treatment' in Greek, which collectively means 'to treat all diseases'. Korean Red Ginseng is universally recognized as being the finest and most effective of all ginsengs. It contains rich amounts of saponin called Ginsenoside. This ingredient activates the functions of the human body as well as strengthening immunity. Korean red ginseng root in its sixth year has most saponin among all ginsengs available worldwide. It is known to work in conjunction with the body's natural metabolism, by producing an energizing effect that helps the body regain its natural vitality. It is also recommended to alleviate tiredness and stress, help blood circulation, help the immune system, help brain function, and has excellent antioxidant properties. Some saponins may even have anti-tumor properties. There is extensive literature that deals with ginseng's effects on the brain (memory, learning, and behavior), neuroendocrine function, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, immune function, and the cardiovascular system. Ginseng has the potential to help with blood sugar levels and some studies show that it can reduce blood lipid levels. Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and plasma MDA levels were decreased by administration of ginseng extract for 8 weeks (6 g per day). These findings support scientific claims that ginseng has lipid lowering potential. Randomized, double-blind study also shows that extract of ginseng reduces influenza cases in the elderly when compared to placebo.
